Norway’s Socialist Party withdrew its support for a proposal to block Equinor’s Hammerfest LNG plant from receiving a planned onshore power connection, clearing the path for the grid project to proceed. The move reduces the odds of a parliamentary setback this week.
Parliament is set to vote on Thursday on an opposition motion seeking to revoke the LNG plant’s planned link to the regional grid, but the party’s withdrawal likely leaves the motion without enough votes. The government approved the connection in 2023 to curb emissions and extend the plant’s operation on Melkoeya island near Hammerfest.
Critics warn that linking a currently gas-driven facility to the grid could reduce electricity available to others, raise local prices and burden Sami reindeer herders. The Red Party had proposed killing the plan, urging the government to free grid capacity for electrification on Melkoeya.
Equinor, Petroco, TotalEnergies, Vaar Energi and Harbour Energy own the plant. The operation accounts for about 5% of Norway’s gas exports. CEO Anders Opedal said the motion would create broad uncertainty for Melkoeya projects, Norway-bound investments and European energy needs.
