Plans have been submitted for wetlands in the west of the Isle of Man. The Manx Wildlife Trust proposes turning Ballacosnahan farm in Patrick into a mosaic of wildlife features, including three bird hides and Sand Martin nesting sites.
The project would transform heavily modified pasture with low ecological value into a complex wetland system. The aim is to benefit a wide range of species and boost biodiversity, store carbon and water, and reduce downstream flooding.
The area would remain part of a working farm with seasonal grazing. The plan includes restoring depressions, creating shallow scrapes and deeper pools to increase temporary water storage and foraging opportunities.
Detalhes das propostas e impactos esperados
Sand Martin nesting chambers are intended to boost breeding opportunities for a migratory bird. The new hides would enable public engagement with minimal disturbance to wildlife. Reintroduced wetland plants are highlighted as a key part of species recovery on the island.
The site would support amphibians, wading birds, ducks, geese, swans, aquatic invertebrates and marginal plants, according to the planning application. Plans state that the wetlands will provide foraging, breeding and refuge areas once completed.
The proposals were recently submitted and will be considered by the island’s planning committee at a later date. No timeline for approval or construction is provided.
